SOMA Magazine: Future Stars of Fashion.

So what is it that excuses the cray cray schedule to give a consequential overrun M.I.A period..
Y'all well aware, I'm sure, that I'm a wannabe writer come journalist and with failure to make the impossible leap from fashion skivvy intern to serious jobber, I'm doing an NCTJ. I'm also hanging around Notion as and when with a shit load of homework and writing gigs in between long days - days  as an unemployed bum seem a lifetime ago. S'all good though. I came to London to live the fashion girl dream and that's exactly what I'm doing- cannot believe I have been here for near on five months.. cray cray.

SO with no time to pap outfit photos and a can't-be-arsed-to-even-get-out-of-bed 'tude that rudely awakens me at 7am, five times a week, I'll let you read something decent I wrote - a introductory profile on Fyodor Golan for SOMA Magazine.

Fyodor Golan

With their hearts firmly placed in the British fashion capital, this designer duo from Latvia (Fyodor Podgorny) and Israel (Golan Frydman) were the proud and well deserved winners of the UK’s prestige Fashion Fringe title. One of the highlights of their career, the exposure has garnered this married couple worldwide recognition.

Their Spring/Summer 2012 collection muses on an oxymoron that reads “flowers of evil.” A notion that is evident instantaneously, then throughout in equal measures, the journey began with Charles Baudelaire’s “Les Fleurs du Mal.” There is more to their decadent designs than a simple strapline however; the undertones of Erdem (namely, flowers and femininity) fused with the overtones of the established Fyodor Golan house style reveal “a purity of shape and form combined with integrity of texture and detail.”

Golan invites us to follow the remainder of the journey. “We looked at the nature and presentation of Frida Kahlo and Vincent van Gogh and this story was about a nymph-like woman who goes through a painful metamorphosis, like Frida Kahlo did. The collection shows this figure grasping for support, going through a metamorphosis so she actually becomes one with nature, developing her own textures, and she almost develops scales.”

Having cemented their sought-after place in the luxury arena, their dresses and corsets can only be described as otherworldly, which poses the question, “Who and What is the Fyodor Golan woman?” Apparently, “she is unafraid of showing both her sensitive and strong sides,” dichotomies such as these seemingly sewn into the fabric of Fyodor Golan’s every creation and inspiration. Conflicts—both creative and personal­—provide the designers with their work ethic. “We love to explore opposites rather than similarities, it’s just something that is a part of our brand. We’re like Jekyll and Hyde.” These contrasting ideas are at the heart of a brand philosophy that is summed up in just three words: “expressive, emotional and sexual.”

Expect to see their take on ‘Russian peasants’ in every stitch of their Autumn/Winter 2012 collection, with inspiration derived from the most unexpected of places, from aristocracy to insects. The duo made their first, highly anticipated appearance at London Fashion Week this season, with even bigger plans to follow as they venture into the realms of knitwear and tailoring.

I have a handful of events to attend over the coming weeks - I'm hoping this will spruce up ayduodd's content.

i interviewed a designer: Roberto Piqueras

Ooh would you look at that I'm about to apologise for yet another unannounced hiatus. I have a real excuse this time - I'm back in the classroom 9 - 6 doing my journo training, four days a week and Fridays are set aside for Notion business. You do the maths - my free time is limited and preferably spent socialising.


But, I shall share this with you..

Less street style snippet, more street style show. Roberto Piqueras invited to us a Bethnal Green estate, Friday afternoon to scout some serious street, street wear, styled by our very own Queen of fabulousness, Alexis Knox. In true Planet Notion style, we stuck around afterwards to speak to the man himself about loving the east as much as us. And the show ofc.

Planet Notion: There’s a good crowd here, props for a first show. How d’you feel it went?Robert Piqueras: Thank you! Yeah, really excited. I’m feeling really well, yeah it was a good show.


PN: You should be! What initially attracted you to London?
RP: Well, I was attracted to London a long time ago when I was seventeen, I think. I was obsessed with London but I had also been here at different times as I was travelling around. Not the world because I was living in Mexico, Madrid and Barcelona. So I was thinking ‘OK before I go to London, I need to see the rest of the world’.


PN: And here you are today. What, in particular, is it about East London that you like?RP: I think the most important is the people. People’s style but not just the styling. When you are walking through Bethnal Green Road, you know, you can feel everyone’s particularity with himself and they are not looking at you or they don’t really gossip about what you are doing. Its very personal and independent. So that’s what I was doing with the street show – to show that kindof East London freedom.


PN: What elements of London do you incorporate into your designs?RP: For example, in the last collection I used the Barcelona Olympics, that you probably wont remember, from 1992. So for example, talking about London I was using the face of the queen with diamonds in the eyes and Big Ben but because I know London is something different for me than the rest of the world – its more about the queen and Big Ben. So its like OK, I want to use that but do it in my own way.


PN: On the subject of Barcelona, how do your designs identify with the city?
RP: Its more not in the actual prints but you can see it in the shapes. I’m feeling more comfy because usually I’m talking about clothes to go to the beach, just walking or sportswear so that’s kind of my identity with Barcelona.


PN: What made you make the transition from menswear to unisex to womenswear?
RP: Well, for example, in this show I think I separated the womenswear and menswear more so but usually I’m talking in unisex because when I’m designing I’ve got those kind of patterns – its very similar but it depends. If you’re putting a woman in it works in a way and if you’re putting a man in it, it works in a different way. So that’s what I’m talking about when I say unisex – it depends who’s wearing the clothes, not like, I’m not working with the silhouette of women or men.


PN: With that in mind, when designing do you not envisage a particular type of person?
RP: Well, yeah and no. Usually, I’m thinking about what kind of clothes am I wearing, my friends or what’s around me.


PN: And who would you most like to see wearing your clothes?
RP: Do you know the blogspot, studioboyo? Its a blogspot about menswear – very East London style. So, because in wonderland magazine they asked me the same and I said the guys in this blogspot. That would be amazing.


PN: Fingers crossed for you, one day!
RP: Laughs. Yeah that would be amazing.

Starting LFW as I mean to go on (HI FREEBIES) and ambling around Shoreditch for an appropriate eatery, I just so happened to pass the Beach Blanket Babylon - the mouth full of a bar that's playing host to Bourjois' bloggers slash anyone's boutique. In conjunction with the fashion goings-on of central LDN, Bourjois have set up camp in an east London bar to offer you 65% off all products, freebie hair styling, manicures and make-overs. OBSESSED.

The gods of SS12 have summoned my presence (and empty purse).

In true, last minute, fashion week, sartorial stress, a curious visit (who am I kidding - its never a fleeting stop, is it?) to TOPSHOP New In, has not done that stress any favours. I am, in a word - OBSESSED.

I could be wearing all of this, all at once, right now (if I really wanted to) if I had got my act together post meaningless uni degree and stuck at some head-desking, egotistical male boss-ing, life sucking employment. NOTHXBBZ. Instead I chose to fashionably float around London, in all my free-lancer glory.
